Agriculture Set for Recovery in 2025

As someone who’s worked closely with our farming community, I know how tough things have been lately—droughts, disease, and logistics challenges have really taken a toll on our agricultural sector. But there’s a lot to feel hopeful about in 2025. 💚

The good news? Dam levels 💧 are improving, and that means more water for irrigation—thank goodness! This is a huge relief for our farmers, especially in the horticulture sector 🌻, which relies heavily on that precious water. With a stable electricity supply ⚡, it feels like we’re finally turning a corner. These improvements are giving our growers the chance to breathe and really thrive this year.

Exports have been strong 📈, with record agricultural product sales pushing beyond R240 billion, and we’re seeing the prices for crops like white maize 🌽 climbing too. That’s not just good for the economy but also for all the hard-working families who depend on agriculture to make a living.

On top of that, the weather forecast is looking a lot more promising 🌦️. A La Niña system is expected, which should bring better conditions for farming. That’s something our farmers are definitely ready for! With seed sales up and farmers preparing for the next planting season 🌱, the confidence is there, and it’s heartening to see.

We still have hurdles to face—logistical issues and the ongoing push for sustainability 🌍—but as always, our farmers are resilient. And with the right support, I believe we can keep building on this momentum.

For me, watching South African agriculture bounce back this year feels personal.
